Tips to Calming the Homeschooling Chaos

Tips to Calming the Homeschooling Chaos

Organization

The easiest way to avoid feeling overwhelmed is to organize. This includes the lesson plans/curriculums, the books, students work etc. Having a system for the different aspects of homeschooling and having a dedicated area helps to put things in perspective and works well in the grand scheme of things.

Prioritization

Think about what is important and plan accordingly. This may change throughout the months (welcome the change). Our homeschooling schedule changes every so often according to life changes, the environment, what's working, what's not working and what needs to be adjusted. There are times when my priority for my kindergartener is reading and phonics. Our lesson plans are then formulated with a focus on reading. This eliminates the pressures of getting several different things done at once.

Pace Yourself

This is where I usually encourage "DE schooling".  De schooling is the process of transitioning from traditional classroom learning to homeschool learning. This is particularly helpful if your children were already in school for some part of their life. I like to think of it as detoxing. Out with the old ideals, in with the new. This period gives the kiddos a chance to get the structure and expectations of "school" out of their system, but also gives parents the opportunity to connect with their child and identify their learning style. The period of DE schooling varies based on families and their various needs. During this period, conversations about homeschooling expectations will help the kiddos prepare and anticipate the transition and be a part of the planning- which I find to be very helpful.

Be Intentional

What is your goal for homeschooling? The purpose of this question is to encourage thought provoking conversations. The best way to avoid a chaotic and negative homeschooling experience is to NOT WING IT! The activities, lessons, schedule, materials- EVERYTHING involved in your homeschooling need to reflect YOUR GOAL.

Include the Main Ingredients

I find that when the kiddos are involved in the process, they tend to receive the lessons better. Needless to say, one of the best ways to minimize the chaos is by having all hands on deck! Some aspects of our homeschooling curriculum are planned by my kids- They tell me what topics they would like to explore and learn about. My job at that point is to implement the activities and facilitate the learning experience.

Leave Time For Yourself

Separate homeschooling from the other aspects of life. Now that you homeschool, you have to make a conscious effort to not allow homeschooling to consume you and take over your role as a parent.

The most important thing I've learned to remember is to give myself grace - GIVE YOURSELF GRACE! A lot of us have started this journey with no previous experience BUT have recognized the benefits. Everyone's homeschooling journey is different. Try not to mimic others approach to homeschooling to the point where you are doubtful of your success as a homeschooling parent!
